Integrated Pest Management is a term that seems to have gained popularity in the last 5 years. In theory, integrated pest management is:

• The trimming, pruning, corrective trimming, and thinning of trees and shrubs.
• Having the correct cultural and environmental situation for each specific species.
• The use of chemicals to prevent tree insect and disease infestation.

Integrated pest management is best practiced when first planting species on a property. If you like river birches and cottonwoods, you would want to plant them in an area that maintains its moisture. Maybe a low spot on the property, or a drainage area. They like moist areas and grow well along river beds and creeks. If you planted a cottonwood or birch on a high point that was airy, you would be watering all the time, and more than likely struggle to keep the insects and disease from taking over the tree.
